Catalog introduction from the Editorial:

It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to this catalog of sacred statues. The pieces you see within are beautiful reflections of the divine and house deep cultural and historical significance. The main focus of this publication is on the sacred art of Burma. In addition we have included key pieces from neighboring cultures including those of India, Nepal, Thailand, Laos, Indonesia and China. It is my honor to introduce you to the collectors, my friends, and to the Jewel of the Lotus.

Jewel of the Lotus was established as a business in 1978 on the principles of the Buddhist Dharma: right livelihood, right conduct, and right mind. These precepts have played an important role in the success of Jewel of the Lotus over the last three decades. In 1987, Jewel of the Lotus began exhibiting Asian Antiques at the Arts of Pacific Asia Show in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and New York, as well as at shows in Hong Kong. Jewel of the Lotus has sold to private collectors in the US, Europe, and Hong Kong. They have pieces in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in Los Angeles as well as the Dallas Museum. Parts of their collection have also been exhibited at the Bowers Museum in Santa Anna, California.

Ernst Egon von Lixfeld, known by his Tibetan name Karma Tsering Dundup, or “Tsajon” to his friends, has been traveling to Asia since 1969 starting with a trip to Kathmandu the first year it opened to tourism. In the 70’s he drove overland from Europe to India five times. Tsajon has educated himself in the religions and cultures of Asia and spent six months in a Tibetan Monastery in Darjeeling, India. He has a degree in Gemology from the Gemological Institute of America which has given him a refined eye for detail and aesthetic value.

The pieces in this catalog are reflections of Tsajon’s keen eye for beauty and detail. He has honed a sixth sense in feeling the energy of artifacts that have been treasured by previous generations as objects of worship or daily use.

Over the past 20 years, Tsajon has been making regular trips to Asia with his wife, Kamalia, an accomplished designer and jeweler. Kamalia has a keen eye for the fashion and beauty of both the contemporary and ancient worlds. Very intuitive, she encourages exploration into sacred art as a form of self enrichment. Deeply spiritual, Kamalia has focused her attention on the mystical aspect of sacred art. The sumptuous pieces in this catalog are not only a form of modern decor but rather key focal points we can introduce in our homes for their original purpose of contemplation.

While most pieces in this catalog are antique, we have included a few newer renditions for the enthralling presence and the feeling of aesthetic sacred beauty they bring. “Genuine ritual artifacts are made according to strict religious laws by pure artisans under the auspices of the Priests or Lamas. Each piece has been consecrated and revered for generations. Statues of these deities are the embodiment of the Divine. While owning one of these masterpieces of art is inspiring to the soul, one also becomes a custodian of a piece of history. These exquisite works of art invoke a sense of calm and serenity in the sanctity of one’s home or work space.”
